Farewell Shalimar Golf Course

Shalimar Speech given on March 19, 2025

I am Nancy Ellis and I was the president here at Shalimar from 2007 until 2019, 12 years. Lots of great memories while meeting so many friends and having wonderful times during those 12 years.

But here are memories I want to share.
-- Sun Valley 9 Travel League
-- Pictures on the bulletin board in the hallway
-- Birdie and Quacker pins
-- There used to be water around hole number 9.
-- Invitational meetings where we made and created decorations for our invitationals - some of the funniest things that have ever happened - happened in these events.
-- Our man VINNIE with the head cover that the two of them matched - look like brothers.
-- all the Invitationals where we not only decorated the tee boxes but we all dressed up … got out Sonya Root's trains for table decorations … put weeds and dirt in empty bean cans for hobo days … we had Hawaiian dancers … wore cowboy hats & six shooters … dressed in pink for breast cancer … dressed up like we were in the 50's again … wore red, white and blue, and we ran those invitationals consecutively repeating them every 6 years and they were:
-- Hobo Invitational
-- Mardi Gras
-- Nifty 50
-- Cowboy Shoot Out
-- Patriotic Invitational and the
-- Hawaiian Invitational

-- great memories of luncheons, club championships, president's cup, hole-in-one club, the DUCK sitting out there that Bob Stolarski created for us that we used to shoot for and put some marks on it with our golf ball.
-- all those beautiful baskets out on the patio for golfers to buy tickets and put them in each container and hopes to win the one that had liquor.
-- the time we all gave Alive Dyck some fake Monopoly Money with her picture on it at our luncheon to handle the fake email sent to all us to send her money as she was stranded at an airport.
-- and Sue Gulley made it on a live TV interview about playing golf at Shalimar at the age of 81 on ABC. This video is on my webpage at coachellis.net -- under Shalimar & click on pictures (on the left, you're here, I highlighted PICTURES in yellow)
-- at every luncheon our TV screens would show pictures of all of our ladies playing golf, or in groups with friends, tons of fun pics just rolling throughout the luncheon & invitationals
-- the time when Brookie Coleman, Bev Tinsley, Marge Collins and I went over to help Yolie Munoz with her new dogs and Yolie wasn't there so we took pictures with the Mandy & Chance in 2012.

People that are Gone but Not Forgotten:
June Ray, Rosemary Frazier, Merle Schmidt, Jean Howell, Cathy Jones, Edna Hayman, Diane Untiedt, Shirley Sherman, Millie Wuger, Mary Brewer, Pat Clevenger, Lucille Walters, Rose Martin, Joan Daniel, Bev Tinsley, Ruth Lawler, Myrtle Thompson and many others that we called "THE GOLDEN GIRLS".
Lewellyn Britt, was one of those ladies and turned 100 last November and is in an assisted living facility today and was one of our greatest golfers here when I joined back in 2007.

I have thousands of pictures and memories online at my website which is

Now Shalimar is added to this list of Golf Courses that were great in the good old days …
Riverview Golf Course, in Mesa, closed in 2012 -
Rio Salado Golf Course, in Tempe, closed in 2015 -
ASU's Karsten Golf Course, in Tempe, closed in 2019 -
And now
Shalimar Golf Course, in Tempe, will close in 2025.

I am glad I am old enough to have play at all four of these sites but especially Shalimar.
Great memories - great fun - great golfing buddies who have become good friends.

In closing, God has been very good to me to allow our paths to cross. AND It was a pleasure being associated with Shalimar over the years that I served, played and caused all the trouble that I could get away with. I love you all and stay active as you get older - the best is yet to come.
