When Mesa Dobson softball Coach Nancy Ellis, who has coached for 30 years, was nominated for Southwest regional Coach of the Year before the season, she was asked to dig up her record. To her surprise, she discovered she was 10 wins short of 500. She reached that milestone 7 wins ago.
Now the Mustangs would like to give their coach a 5A title to take with her at this summer's National High School Athletic Association convention, where she'll be honored as the regional Coach of the Year.
Getting to the tournament
will be tough enough for Dobson, which is 17-3 but plays in the East Valley
Region, where five teams are ranked among the top 10 in 5A. Only three from
the region go to state.
