Day 73 - Niagara Falls, ON to Holley, NY - 72 miles ............ 3317 total miles
The challenge of the day was riding on the Lewiston Queenston bridge over the Niagara River to cross back into the US. There is no pedestrian walkway so we had to join the traffic. No problem though because customs was so backed up we were stopped or creeping along for about an hour, patience was required! Happy to be thru customs we cruised away and missed the welcome to NY sign. The highlight of the day was riding on the Erie Canalway for 40 miles. It's a hard packed stone dust surfaced trail along the Erie Canal. There are little towns along the canal with a variety of services. We met Chris who has a little bike shop with ice cream right along the trail, great guy! Tonight we're camping at a boater, hiker, biker campsite next to the canal in Holley.

Day 74 - Holley, NY to Palmyra, NY -
51 miles ............ 3368 total miles
We rode the whole day on the path along the Erie Canal. An amazing feat of engineering from the early 1800's! The towpath we rode on seemed very rural yet we got glimpses of towns, farms, orchards and roads. The ride thru Rochester was all on the path, very pleasant. Stopped for lunch in Pittsford at a restaurant where we saw other bikes. There we met Lori, Jerry and Travis. Lori and Jerry started their ride in WA 65 days ago, Travis just joined them. Their all heading to Maine. It's always great to meet other touring cyclists! As we neared Palmyra dark clouds were moving in. We took cover as the rain started coming down. Though we'd planned to go a bit further, decided it was time to stop for the evening.

Finished Ontario, heading back into the good old USA!
Border crossings take forever, even on a bike.

We're following the Erie Canal for 90 miles. It's well signed. Great to be away from traffic for awhile.

--

Ice cream & a bikeshop just off the trail, we had to stop! Enjoyed chatting with Chris the owner. He's led bike tours locally & overseas, worked in a large bike shop, and dreamed
of opening a small shop along the canal. He opened this shop in May. What a great find!

This was our campsite at Holley next to the Erie Canal. It's one of several boater, hiker, biker campgrounds along the canal that are free. There were clean showers and restrooms available. Beautiful spot.

Thursday morning leaving the Holley biker/hiker/boater campground. Sites are across the canal.

A tour boat cruising east. They all had bikes on top.

--

This boat just entered the lock. The harbor master is going to the other end to
drop the water level & open the gates so they can pass through.
--

The water dropped over 25 feet! We couldn't even see the boat when they departed.

Travis, Lori & Jerry who we met at lunch. They are also heading to Maine.
We hope to meet up with them again before this ride is over.
