Not much energy today, could have something to do with the
headwind. We came upon the Crazy Eight Barn and had to check it out. It's an octagonal
barn that was moved 8 miles and totally restored. The hayloft houses a cafe and
garden store. The whole space and surrounding veggie gardens are beautiful. We
enjoyed chatting with the owners and sampling carrot muffins fresh out of the
oven. Today we're following the Talbot Trail, which was a corduroy road built
in the 1820's to connect Fort Erie to Detroit. Enjoying learning a bit of the
local history. Tonight we're staying in St. Thomas.
Day 70 - St. Thomas,
ON to Port Dover, ON - 59
miles ........ 3146
total miles
Beautiful weather, we wove along country roads thru farmland
with many different crops, most of which we couldn't identify. Besides corn, we
saw fields of tobacco, cucumber, ginseng, asparagus and more. As the day went
on the traffic increased, it's Sunday and many folks are on holiday. We stopped
at a fruit and veggie stand, they had just harvested the first apples of the season.
We enjoyed ice cream and raspberry cider slush, very tasty! We looked for accommodations
when we arrived in Port Dover, we knew there was one hotel and many B&B's.
We didn't realize all of southern Ontario was visiting Port Dover! After several
calls we found a room for the night. We lucked out as a group canceled. No wifi
but we're happy to have a comfy spot. We walked down to the beach on the shore
of Lake Erie and were overwhelmed by the mass of people visiting this small town
of 6,000! Too many people for us! We're having dinner at a spot with wifi. Looking
forward to a quiet evening back at the B&B.
