Day
23 - Missoula, MT to Ovando, MT - 51
miles .......... 890
total miles
Today
we followed the Blackfoot River upstream. Lots of people out rafting and fishing,
no picnic areas though. The scenery was awesome, broad views with mountains in
all directions. We're following highway 200 and stopped for a ice cream break
at the junction with the highway that heads north towards Kalispell and Glacier
NP. We arrived in Ovando and met some guys biking the Continental Divide trail.
They had mountain bikes with big tires. Ovando is a small town, population 29.
We stayed at the Blackfoot Inn above the general store. It took a long time for
the room to cool down, the tent might have been a better choice!
Day
24 - Ovando, MT to Canyon Creek, MT - 63

Made
it over the continental divide! We're too tired to celebrate, might be the heat.
It is an exciting thought that there are no more big mountain passes for awhile
and it's all downhill to the Mississippi, ha ha! We started the day with a big
breakfast in Ovando, mistake...took several hours to find any energy. The scenery
unfolded around every turn, forests, rivers and open range. We were undecided
as to where we would cross the divide as we were venturing off the Adventure Cycling
route. We had a smoothie in Lincoln and realized it was too early to stop for
the day. Looked at the maps again, they hadn't changed, and noticed there was
camping at Canyon Creek General Store over the divide. That became our destination.
We had a tailwind much of the day and happily turned off on highway 279, towards
Flesher Pass, the traffic was much lighter. We climbed for about 8 miles through
forest sighted our favorite sign, picture of a truck heading downhill. The downhill
was quite a cruise through forests, meadows with wildflowers and finally to dry
farmland with irrigation and hayfields. We're camping at Canyon Creek, nice folks,
had some cold beverages & a shower. All is well though the bathroom is quite
a ways away from our tent! Happy 4th!

ready for 4th of July Parade in Ovando, MT. The young man, who looked like he's
