Catbird Seat B&B to Belknap Hot Springs, OR - 78
miles ... total trip miles - 144
....
We were able to get back on the bike seats on day 2 and didn't notice
too many aches as we headed for Eugene under cloudy skies. We missed a turn and
wandered thru Eugene on bike paths and bike lanes, met many friendly helpful people
along the way. During lunch we studied our maps and checked the weather forecast
for the next days, thinking ahead to our up coming 4000' climb over Mckenzie Pass.
Friday looked like the best weather for the ascent so we decided to spend the
night in Springfield and ride a few shorter days resting up for the climb.
....
Wednesday we had a pleasant ride out of Springfield on back roads,
rolling along to Walterville where we joined hwy 126, a busy road between Eugene
and Sisters. We followed the Mckenzie River, passed fields, dense forests, flowers
and beautiful homes & properties. We spent the night at a B & B along
the river. Thursday morning we woke up to rain, glad we weren't in a tent! We
hung out for a while hoping for the rain to stop but finally decided it was time
to try out the rain gear. We're happy to report it works! We continued following
the Mckenzie River upstream to Belknap Hot Springs where we spent the night. Walking
along trails at Belknap we met a couple bike tourers heading to Florida. We soaked
in the hot pool, rested up and got psyched for our BIG climb the next day. Hope
we can do it!
