Saturday
May 2 Vigo
Northwest area of Spain province of Pontevedra and region of Galicia (Galithia).
Deep bays here allow for seafood farming---mussels, scallops & oysters.
One of Spain's most imp. fishing port. Celts were here in 5th century &
we visited a neat village outside of Vigo called Combarro---built on rocks
right on the sea. Can see evidence of celts everywhere & people superstitious
as well--every May 1st they put yellow flowers on door to ward off bad stuff
& bring them luck. They built stone granaries called horreos up on stone
platforms to keep grain from rotting from moisture. Loved this place. Drove
on to another seaside town "O Grove". Boarded a catamaran and they
took us out to see the seafood farms----big wooden platforms with ropes hanging
down and everything growing scallops, mussels etc) on the ropes. Then inside
the boat they smacked down bottles of fabulous white wine (Albariño)
and boxes of fresh steamed mussels--oh my was I in heaven or what. What a
cool day today was. Weather overcast and cool but no one cared!!
