This is our last day in Australia. It's a holiday, Western Australia Day. We took a ferry ride to Rottnest Island. It's 18km off the coast, a couple hour ferry ride from Perth City, down the Swan River, past Fremantle out to the Indian Ocean.

Our day started early, the tour company picked us up at the bus stop across from our hotel. We had time to walk around Elizabeth Quay before the ferry departed.

We came upon an early morning tai chi group.

The ferry ride took us past Fremantle where several container ships were loading.

Rottnest Island is surrounded by beaches and is almost traffic free. The best way to see the island is by bicycle. We rented bikes and hopped on them just as we got off the ferry. There were hundreds of people on bikes exploring the island. The roads were paved with loops varying in distance, the longest was 22km.

The bike were basic 3 speeds, we had to work hard going up the hills! The scenery was great! It was fun to see so many folks riding. The only traffic was a hop on hop off bus.

We had a great day!

Rottnest Island is home to this furry little marsupial, the quokka. We saw many. They are protected and quite friendly. Unfortunately we saw quite a few people feeding them, disregarding the many signs not to feed the wildlife.

We also saw a couple of these lizards out on the west end of the island.
