We were a bit overwhelmed arriving in Katherine yesterday. Katherine is where "the outback meets the tropics". It's a larger town of around 10,000, with all services, including McDonalds, more traffic and roundabouts. Look right, stay left, oops, go around again! The visitor information center was extremely helpful in giving us options for the last few days of our travels. The star attraction of the area is Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Today we enjoyed walking, exploring the river gorges, waterfalls and scenery of Nitmiluk National Park.

This was the beginning of the Baruwei Loop walk.
---

The walk was steep in spots taking us up to a lookout overlooking the Katherine River.

There are a variety of gorge tours on the river throughout the day.
---

Quite a variety of vegetation.
---

We opted for the 2 hour 2 gorge tour. The gal next to Roxy is from Italy, spending 3 months traveling around Australia. Her English was great, much better than our Italian!
---

The tour consisted of a boat ride through the first gorge, a 600 meter walk, and then a second boat ride through the second gorge. There are actually 13 gorges along this section of the Katherine River.

The gorges aren’t open for canoeing or swimming yet because there are still a few salties, saltwater crocs, in the area. Salties are predatory. Freshies, freshwater crocs, are here year around.
---

Here’s a young freshie on the log. The ranger said you can tell the difference between salties & freshies, salties swim at you, freshies swim away.
---

We drove a short distance north of Katherine to Edith (Leliyn) Falls, another section of Nitmiluk National Park. We hiked the Leliyn loop trail up and around waterfalls and pools along the Edith River.
---

Great views!
---

Folks were enjoying a swim in all 3 pools.
---

There was a small kiosk and campground here. The campground was full. Fortunately we weren’t planning on staying the night. We headed north along the Stewart Highway to a caravan park in Pine Creek for the night.
