Today we
left the coast and headed inland. It was a shorter drive, 3 hours, from Derby
to Fitzroy Crossing. We stopped at the visitor center to get information about
Geikie Gorge National Park and get suggestions for lunch.

This
is the cafe we stopped at. It is owned by a local Aboriginal corporation.
The commercial kitchen was designed as a training kitchen for community
members. |
The
menus was developed to target preventable diseases by adopting nutritional
foods and using food as medicine. The lunches were delicious. What a
find in a very small place in the middle of nowhere! |
|
The
veggies came from this aquaponic garden out behind the cafe. |
Wow!
Quite progressive! |
|
We
walked along a trail in Geikie Gorge National Park following the Fitzroy
River, one of the longest rivers in Australia. Overlooking the Margaret
River joining the Fitzroy. |
We
saw lots of wallabies. They were really quick, hard to snap a pic! Look
really close at the magnified circle. |
|
Hiking
through some of the limestone outcropping. |
The
white placards along the support beams indicate the year and high water
marks of the Fitzroy River flooding. Several years the high water mark
was 4 meters over the top of the gazebo! |
|
We
went on an hour boat cruise in Geikie Gorge. The aboriginal name for
the gorge is Danngu. A park range was the skipper and our guide. |
It
was amazing where vegetarian grew and how the roots reached down through
the limestone towards the river seeking water. |
|
We
did see one crocodile, no picture though. The ranger said not as many
are being seen now because its mating season, theyre not
spending as much time lazing around and sunning. |
The
colors on the limestone walls were stunning towards sunset! |
