We started
the day in Tom Price, a mining town in the Pilbara region and ended in Karijini
National Park. We've been staying in caravan parks with a variety of amenities.
The parks are quite large, many with over 100 sites, both powered and unpowered.
There is always an ablution block with toilets, showers and often laundry
& clothesline. Amenities also include kitchen area & BBQ (barbie).
The caravan park visitors include travelers, Aussies on holiday with kids
& gray nomads (retired folks wandering).

Weve
seen live kangaroos but theyre too quick for a picture. There
have also been sections of road with quite a few roadkills. |
Our
day often starts with a walk in search of a mocha. |
|
In
Tom Price we went on a tour of the Rio Tinto iron ore mine. The mine
has been in operation since the mid 1960s and expects 40 more
years of production. 5 ore trains, 2.5 km long consisting of 236 cars
leave the mine each day traveling to ports for export. |
This
is one of the huge holes. |
|
Often
our first stop in town is visitor information. Most of them are staffed
with friendly folks who are happy to share their knowledge of the local
area. |
We
spent the night at Karijini Eco Retreat in the National Park. It was
a basic campground, no powered sites, WiFi or cell service. We did have
a solar shower and lots of bush flies. |
|
The
draw of Karijini is the gorges. We did a walk to Joffre Gorge overlook
and then down into the gorge. The waterfall was dry due to the lack
of rain. |
There
was water in the pool at the bottom of the gorge. |
