We stayed
2 nights in Kalbarri so we could explore Kalbarri National Park. There are
2 sections of the park with different landscapes, the inland river gorges
and coastal cliffs. Before heading to the park, we watched a pelican feeding
on the beach just across the road from the campground.

Volunteers
from the community feed pelicans on the beach at 8:45 each morning.
This started with a restaurant owner cleaning fish for the catch of
the day over 40 years ago. The restaurant changed hands several times
and 25 years ago volunteers took over the feeding. The gal gave us all
kinds of info about pelicans. |

Roxy's
shirt turned into a sahib head-cover due to the many bush flies. Not
so different than mosquitoes in Alaska. Note to self, buy head nets! |
We
did the 8km loop hike from a viewpoint overlooking the river, down to
the river and back up. This was a wide section of the trail along the
river! We had to crawl along a narrow shelf with an overhanging ledge
and drop off to the river. No chance for a picture, we were focused
on getting through that section without going for a swim! |

Overlooking
Murchison River. |
Lots
of cool sandstone formations in the river gorge area. |
|
Looking
down at the river. Its muddy from cyclone rains 8 weeks ago upstream
800km. It take 6 weeks for muddy water to reach Kalbarri and the Indian
Ocean. |
Some
of the walking along the river was on very loose sand, a calf workout! |

Coastal
cliffs along the highway in Kalbarri National Park. |
So
many outstanding views! This section of Western Australia is called
the coral coast. |
