Denmark-the
southernmost Scandinavian country
Denmark consists of the Jutland peninsula, bordering Germany to the south,
& over 400 islands in the North Sea. The area is about twice the size
of Massachusetts with a population of 6 million. The furthest you can be from
the coast in Denmark is 32 miles! We stayed in the 3 largest cities, Copenhagen,
Aarhus & Odense. Getting around was easy with a travel pass that included
trains & buses for a week.

The canal tour boats carry 150 passengers! There are lots of them! The side canals are pretty narrow with houseboats & cafes lining the edges. The canals are open to the public for swimming & anything that floats! Chaotic for sure, especially on a sunny day. |
You can paddle the canals for free with a GreenKayak. The only requirements are to pick up trash & post on social media. GreenKayak is building a global network. Since 2017 GreenKayak volunteers have collected over 104 tons of trash worldwide! |
How about waffles on a stick? Churros are popular too. This part of the world really has pastries of every kind, available anytime & delicious! Jams, jellies & fresh fruit are often the toppings. No syrup or powdered sugar to go with the Swedish pancakes??? |

This is from the 6th floor of the Black Diamond, the modern section of the Royal Danish Library, looking out to the canal. The library actually consists of 3 connected buildings. The original library was founded in 1648 & merged with the university library in 1989. The Black Diamond was added in 1999. Quite the architectural contrast! |
Local folks in Copenhagen own 5 times more bikes than cars. 1,245 bicycles passed by this counter before noon. Around town there are many dedicated bike lanes. Definitely have to be aware walking! |
Railroad pub, a small place right across from the train station. After a long day of walking, it was a welcome sight. They had live music, cold beer & ciders. An accordionist & guitar/harmonica player treated us to some oldies & Danish folk music (we think as it was Danish). Very fun. |

In Aarhus, Denmarks 2nd largest city (pop 300,000) we went to the library. Its a really beautiful new building. Never have heard of bookpong. The players are using books for the net & paddles. A fine rainy day activity. |
We discovered the Street Food Market in Aarhus. The permanent market, located in the old bus garages, has over 30 vendors offering foods from around the world. It appeared to be popular with locals along with tourists. |
From the 6th floor of the Salling Dept store in Aarhus. Its fantastic! The idea was to give underutilized space a purpose, an outdoor oasis on the rooftop. Its got a variety of raised pocket gardens throughout the 15,000 sf roof. Footbridges, with glass walls & floors looking down into the store & town, connect 3 levels. There are a variety of cafes, lots of places to sit & spectacular views. |

Den Gamle By is a living reconstruction of life in a market town thru the centuries. There are 4 neighborhoods representing 1864, 1927, 1974 & 2014. The treats in this shop were hand made from original recipes. |
We made a brief visit to Lego House-Home of the Brick in Billund near where Lego began in 1932. At Lego House, completed in 2017, visitors of all ages can play & create with Lego bricks. There were lots of families, though not as many as at Legoland amusement park just down the road. The kids were having a great time! |
Hillerød, about an hour train ride north of Copenhagen, is home to the Frederiksborg Castle. It was built in the 1700s on 3 islands surrounded by a lake. The setting is spectacular! The gardens are humongous & just beautiful to walk around. |
