We traveled to Trondheim on an express ferry, 3 1/2 hours from Kristiansund. Coming in to Trondheim we passed this island, Munkholmen. Executions took place here in ancient times. The island also housed a monastery, fortress & prison. Today its a popular place for outings & swimming. |
The Nidaros Cathedral was built over a couple centuries, considered complete in 1300. It was built over the burial site of King Olav, who later became the patron saint of the nation. Its also the traditional location for the consecration of new kings of Norway. |
The inside of Nidaros Cathedral has beautiful stained glass widows. Fires destroyed all but the rock wall in the 1700s. After restoration started in 1869, stained glass windows were added. |
|
The ornate Rose Window inside Nidaros Cathedral. The many stained glass windows throughout the cathedral were beautiful! |
The Gamle Bybru (old town bridge) was built in 1681 to provide easy access from Trondheim to the Kristianen Fortress. The bright buildings are repurposed storehouses. |
This view is from Kristiansten Fortress, built after
the great fire in 1681. The island, just off the cruise ship, is Munkholmen.
During WWII the Nazis executed Norwegian resistance fighters here.
Some of the fortress walls and buildings remain. |

This is a bicycle lift called Trampe. There is a retractable pedal under this guys right foot. Its mounted on an underground cable. The theory is you place your foot on the pedal with your weight on it & youll zip up the hill. We didnt see anyone make it to the top. But nobody fell over lol. |
We did a walk about. We havent mastered GPS directions yet. After passing the same place for the 3rd time, we found our way back to town. We went thru some kinda iffy areas but had no bad encounters. Actually , we were so far off the trail, we didnt see anyone! |
This is the pedestrian & walking bridge over the Nidelva River. Were back on track and know where we are! |
|
We have noticed in our European travels that decorating the old town streets with colorful overhead hangings is the thing. They are fun. |
Found these dog houses outside the mall in Trondheim. They are coin/credit card operated. They are temperature controlled & look cozy. Norways answer to no pets inside stores?? Havent seen them anywhere else, dont think there would be much interest. |
So many boats along the wharf! It was a beautiful morning walking to the train station the day we left Trondheim. |
