Hardangerfjord-Norheimsund
to Ulvik
The Hardangerfjord is located southeast of Bergen. The fertile area is considered
the fruit orchard of Norway. In 1875 Thomas Cook started weekly cruise departures
from London to the Hardangerfjord due to spectacular scenery. This was the
start of tourism in Norway. Soon after many of the waterfalls became the power
source for large industries in fjords towns. Tourism continues to boom today!

Looking out at the Hardanger Fjord, waiting for the Nor-Led express ferry to Eidfjord. |
This is the Nor-Led express ferry we rode through the Hardangerfjord. The boat made quick stops at a few villages, just long enough to get on & off. We had to book tickets online and found it easy to do! |
This is the village of Utne. The church was built in 1892 and seats about 300 people. The current population is about 146! |
|
This is half of the Hardanger Bridge. The whole thing wouldnt fit in the picture. Its the longest suspension bridge in Norway at almost 1 mile. |
We spent a night in Eidfjord, a beautiful small village of 900. The village is surrounded by snow capped mountains. Eidfjord is also a popular cruise ship stop. This walk took us to a scenic overlook. Were blocking the huge cruise ship thats docked. |
This is the world's largest pelton. The Pelton wheel extracts energy from the impulse of moving water. Have no idea what this really means! Hydro-electric power generation gave this area a new life. The wheel broke & it is now a piece of artwork in Eidfjord. |

These rock mounds are burial grounds from the iron age 1000-2500 years ago. Wow, hard to get our heads around civilizations that long ago! |
We visited the Trebua Woodshop. Olaf here is the master woodworker. He was born next door & started learning his craft from his father at 10. He uses no power tools. It took him 4 months to make this door. We had a great visit! |
We visited an outstanding nature museum in Øvre Eidfjord with great taxidermy exhibits and a movie about the Hardanger area. Across the road was this building, a restaurant & gift shop. We were told the goats were just put on the roof last week. |
|
Along the Main Street was a line of trees with woolen crocheted covers. It was an art project for the community. |
The bakeries here are just dangerous! It was quiet so we visited with the clerk for a bit. She said when the cruise ship docked, 2000-5000 folks will be wandering the streets. This is the only bakery in Eidfjord gets crazy busy! |
We spent a second night along the Hardangerfjord in the village of Ulvik. The village center of Ulvik was burned in 1940 by the Germans in retaliation to being hindered by Norwegian resistance fighters. Ulvik today is an apple growing area that produces great ciders. |
