Write
Yourself a Lower Tax Bill
"Close
your eyes. Imagine a place where everyone could give $200
to their favorite public school and get all that money back
as a credit on state taxes . . .
"Wake
up. Welcome to Arizona, the state where the taxed can write
themselves a lower tax bill."
Those
words led an editorial published by the Arizona Republic,
which endorsed a new state law allowing each household up
to $200 in a tax credit.
Married
couples can donate $400 and individuals, $200--but please
check out the link at the top of the page for any new
amounts allocated by law for contributions as they are
updated more frequently than this page is updated about
ECA donations.
Extracurricular
Activities are Good for Kids
The
primary mission of public schools is academics and student
achievement, so available financial resources are directed
primarily toward the classroom.
However,
research shows that participation in extracurricular activities
provides a safe, supervised place for students to be after
school; contributes to a positive attitude toward school;
builds on vocational or avocational interests; and leads
to increased student achievement.
The
dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $250 for taxpayers
to donate funds to a public school of their choice will
make extracurricular activities available to more students
and more affordable for families.
Parents
and Non-parents are Eligible
Parents,
as well as taxpayers who do not have a child enrolled in
a public school, are eligible for the tax credit, which
is not the same as a deduction on your income tax form.
As an example, if you owe $1,000 in state income taxes and
you donate $250 to a public school for extracurricular activities,
you may subtract the $250 from your tax bill and pay the
state only $750.
Donations
May be Prioritized
If
youd like to support extracurricular activities for
students, complete a form, available at all schools and
on line (at the top of this document), and mail it in the
self-addressed envelopes which also are available. Donations
may be contributed to a central fund or may be prioritized
for a particular extracurricular activity.
Receipts
Will be Issued
You
will receive a receipt to use when your tax return is prepared.
Donations must be received by December 31 in order for you
to be eligible for the tax credit this calendar year. Deadline
for drop off donations is December 23 by 4:30 PM.
