PASSAU
GERMANY--10-16 Thurs
We
are in Germany in the small town of Passau on the Danube River. Sailed from Melk
last night and after going through more locks, got here this am. Passau is in
the southern or Bavarian area of Germany. The town is called the town of 3 rivers
because it is where 3 rivers meet---the Danube, Ilz and Inn Rivers. Population
here is about 50,000 people. The old town has lots of little alleyways to discover
and of course lots of bakeries and sweet shops and beer gardens. The weather has
changed to light rain but not too cold
.60 or so which is heaven for me (Tonis
cold). St. Stephens Cathedral in the center of town is huge and ornate and houses
the largest pipe organ outside of the United States. Attended a short concert
there today before we had a yummy sausage and sauerkraut lunch at a really old
Bavarian restaurant/Beer Garden. Weather yukky so couldnt sit outside. Back
on the boat early because we are sailing to next town of Regensburg. We have been
sitting here on the river for about an hour waiting for our turn to go through
the next lock. I think I mentioned before that we go through 69 locks on this
voyage. Its really cool to see how once we are in the gates, they will it
up with water and we go up to the next level and sail out. You might end up seeing
a zillion pics of the locks because it really is fascinating.
